Basic, Essential Guinea Pig Supplies You Need!

If you are considering purchasing a guinea pig for a pet (or have have just recently aquired one) there are a few basic supplies that are necessary to maintain a happy, healthy and playful pet. These supplies include a carry case, cage, bedding, food dish, hay rack, water bottle or bowl, and a hiding hut.

Carry Case
All you need here is a simple cat carrier like the one shown here (click on the image to learn more). The reason you will want a carry case is because it is an invaluable tool to use when transporting your guinea pig to and from the vet and even when you need a place to keep your guinea pig while you are in their hutch or cage. Be sure to place some newspaper in the bottom to prevent your guinea pig from slipping around too much.

The top priorities for choosing a guinea hutch include size, safety, and convenience. If possible, a single guinea pig should have a guinea hutch that is approximately three feet long by three feet wide (such as the one shown to the left available). Health is the simple reason for this recommendation. A larger guinea pig cage is going to be more sanitary than a smaller one because a smaller one forces your guinea pig to live in a glorified litter box. A larger hutch gives your guinea pig more area with unspoiled bedding for him/her to live in. In addition to this, the bigger the hutch, the more your guinea pig can move around. Exercise is a very important component to the health of your guinea pig. By having a larger hutch for your guinea pig to live in you can create areas that are designed for exercise and toys. This will reduce problems with weight gain and other health related issues.

Hiding Hut
Guinea Pigs love to hide in "caves" and this is where they get their nickname, cavys. This is partially because in the wild, caves provided safety because guinea pigs were prey animals. Therefore, a hiding hut (click on the one to the left to learn more) gives your guinea pig a sense of being safe and secure, which leads to a happier, healthy guinea pig. PVC pipes are also fun and effective for giving your guinea pig a hiding place - especially if you make use of different joints. Just make sure that whatever is chosen is not chewable as a guinea pig will quickly chew a cardboard box up.

Food Dish
You should look for a food dish that is made out of a heavy material such as clay or ceramics. This is because you need a dish that is too heavy to be knocked over all the time and sturdy enough that it cannot be chewed up. Guinea pigs can chew through a lot of things, so make sure you don't provide a simple plastic dish that your pet will try to eat. Also, make sure you stick with a good guinea pig diet when using your dish.

Water Bottle
You will want to find a "gravity style" water bottle because these are hard to knock over and they keep the water clean. Make sure and buy a bottle that holds at least eight ounces to provide enough water for you guinea pig daily. The last thing you want to look for is a bottle with a metal ball in the tip because this prevents leaking.

Hay Rack
In addition to pellet food, guinea pigs need hay in their diet for ideal health, Timothy Hay is best. A hay rack will attach to an upper side of the cage and allow your guinea pig to pull single strands of hay out to eat. A hay rack will prevent hay from scattering all over the guinea pig's cage.

These are the guinea pig supplies you will want to consider investing in to help maintain a happy, healthy, playful guinea pig (and an easier to maintain guinea pig) for years to come.
